FLAMENCO ROOTS
As a choreographer, Joaquin starts with flamenco roots as a foundation and combines this with other genres like Contemporary and Regional Dance, Jazz, or Urban. He mixes these with meticulous choreography, staging and lighting design to create awe inspiring original shows.
Pure
MUSICALS
As a creator of theme-based musicals, since Joaquin´s primary form of communication is non-verbal, what differentiates him is his ability to make a story perfectly understandable without the use of words, using the language of interpretation and dance as his communication channel. Using classical stories for inspiration, the common theme of his works is Flamenco uniquely combined with other musical genres to create truly original works of art. His work features anything from Opera, Classical Music, Jazz, House, or even Rock n´ Roll.
MALIZIA | THE MUSICAL
Our featured musical is the story of Malizia. Our version of Verdi´s Rigoletto opera. The story of Curro¨El Chepa¨ is a buffoon that works for a corrupt politician and womanizer, helping him out with his ¨dirty work.¨ When the politician notices Curro´s sweet and innocent daughter, he abducts her, which consequently enrages the buffoon, who then plans his most cruel vengeance. Opera and Flamenco merge here in a spectacular musical masterpiece.
Joaquin Marcelo has also created musicals of "Carmen", "Don Juan", "Urban Romeo", "Essence of love" and "Airam". As the creative director, he was responsible for the adapted idea, choreography, set design, lighting design, and stage direction. See more of his work here.
FLAMENCO SHOWS
Whilst working with Carmen Mota Dance Company in the last 20 years, Joaquin has created countless flamenco based choreographies and dance shows, not just Musicals. Our genuine approach, blending pure flamenco with more Broadway or Las Vegas type shows, generates a unique brand and flair to all our performances. International venues such as Sporting Club of Montecarlo, State Kremlin of Moscow or Niagara Fallsview have witnessed and enjoyed our shows.
One of Joaquin´s main skills is the capacity to adapt to anything and everything. He has a plethora of experience working in multiple different types of stages, such as theatres, night clubs, "tablaos" (flamenco venues) and circus.
ABOUT JOAQUIN
As the son of dancers Joaquín Robles and Carmen Mota, Joaquin was raised in a dance environment. He studied Flamenco with various instructors, being mainly influenced by Raúl Martínez and Antonio Montoya “El Farruco”. He learned Regional Dance from Pedro Azorin and Spanish Dance from his mother, later going on to join her company as a member of the dance team, eventually becoming one of the soloist dancers of the company. Without the ability to hear music (he completely lost the ability to hear at the age of eight), and through the vibrations transmitted by the floor, Joaquin has danced on stages all over the world without the audience knowing about his hearing problem.
As a soloist, he danced at the millenium inauguration gala in Berlin in the presence of then President Helmut Kohl. Following his dancing career, Joaquin decided to dedícate himself fully to choreography, and made his debut at the Miss Spain Gala in 1999. Since then, Joaquin has been constantly working in the creation of new choreographies and musicals. Much of his work has been aired on television. Joaquin also choregraphed the successful show "Fuego!", which has been performed in theatres across Europe, Canada and Asia.
